The Nivi style is most commonly worn and accepted draping method. It is from Andhra Pradesh and consists of tucking in one end of the saree into the waistline, wrapping around the waist, making pleats in front, and draping the pallu across the left shoulder. The style suits the majority of body types and is acceptable for all occasions office wear to weddings.
2. Gujarati Style (Seedha Pallu)
Favored in Rajasthan and Gujarat, the Gujarati drape carries the pallu from behind over the right shoulder and arranges it over the bust, usually pinned at the waist. The front-facing pallu looks stunning as it emphasizes heavy embroidery or elaborate borders and thus is preferred for festivals and weddings.
3. Bengali Style
The Bengali saree drape is characterized by elegant, broad pleats and the special double-pallu effect. The saree is draped around the body without pleats at the waist, and the pallu is draped over both shoulders. Coupled traditionally with accessories such as a large bindi and key chain at the waist, it’s mostly used during Durga Puja and other Bengali celebrations.
4. Maharashtrian Nauvari Style
The Nauvari style employs a nine-yard saree and is draped over the body like a dhoti, with the pleats folded at the back and the pallu falling over the shoulder. It’s a practical yet fashion-forward look, captured in the Maratha warrior woman spirit. It’s mostly worn in classical dances and religious ceremonies in Maharashtra.
5. Kerala Style (Mundum Neriyathum)
Kerala Traditional drape is a two-piece one consisting of lower garment and a shawl-like upper garment (pallu). The style is usually in white with golden borders symbolizing purity and simplicity. It is traditionally worn during Onam and other traditional events.
6. Lehenga Style Saree
This is a contemporary fusion drape where the saree is draped around the waist in a Lehenga style and the pallu is fashioned like a dupatta over the shoulder. It’s a great option for parties, receptions, and engagement ceremonies if you need the saree look with lehenga convenience.
7. Butterfly or Bollywood Style
Trendy through its celebrity endorsements, the Butter fly drape sees pleating the pallu into a narrow band and fixing it tightly across the shoulder to highlight the midriff. Elegant to wear with chiffon or net sarees, this is ideal for formal occasions.
